Happy weekend!

What a busy week it has been! Our realistic fiction stories are coming to life and we're ready to follow our characters even closer in our reading. Here are a few updates:

  • You may have noticed the lack of math homework this week. We spent the week reviewing what we have learned in Unit 1 and taking the first assessment.
  • This week's reading log will be the last of its kind. In the future, students will have to keep track of the pages they plan to read and books they are working on with a different type of log that does not require adult's initials. Please continue to monitor and encourage your child to read 20-30 minutes 5 times per week. "The more you read, the more you know. The more you learn, the more places you'll go!" - Dr. Seuss
  • If you haven't already, please be sure to sign and return permission slips for our field trip to the Portland Symphony Orchestra by Monday.
  • Woohoo! We've worked really hard to earn a "crazy hat day". We have planned it for Tuesday the 24th. Any hat will work!
Enjoy your weekend!

A few things...

Hello Families,

What fun we have been having in room 304! We have been learning different ways to jot in our reading, and working hard on hooking our reader's attention with our realistic fiction stories in writing. We're just finishing up Unit 1 in math with some geometry lessons on lines, angles, and perimeter. We also just started Maine Studies and are using online and classroom resources to create maps of Maine!

A few things to know...

  • I emailed a link for families to sign up for Seesaw- an app that students will post to so their families can see some of the great work we do in the classroom!
  • I am planning on holding conferences on Veterans Day and the week leading up to it. I will be sending out a link to sign up for a time that works for you.
I hope you enjoy this beautiful weekend!

Updates and Announcements

We had a great week at YES this week! Students have been working closely with their reading partners to get to know them better as readers. In writing, their story arcs are beginning to take shape for a realistic fiction story that they will begin drafting this week. Multistep number stories got sent home this week- I hope you were challenged by the creative writing and math they developed. On Friday, we had our first community meeting. The kids were excited to see our special guest, Steamer the Clam, who plans to visit YES at each of our community meetings!

A few announcements:

  • No school Friday, October 6th for a Teacher Inservice Day. Have a nice long weekend!
  • After sending home forms for students to change their Google Passwords, Cathy Wolinsky and the fourth grade team have realized that, with one-to-one devices, we will not actually be able to or need to change them. Thank you for having the discussion about password safety with your child, anyway. We will continue to monitor that students are only accessing their own Google Accounts in school and hope the same can be done when students access the internet at home.
I hope everybody has a wonderful week!

Next Week

We have a busy week coming up next week! Here are a few things families need to know:

  • Band starts next week! Please help your child remember to bring their instrument on the following days:
    • Monday: Clarinets
    • Tuesday: Flutes
    • Wednesday: Saxophones
    • Thursday: Trombones and Percussion
    • Friday: Trumpets
  • On Monday we will have the reading session of MAP Growth testing. Please help your child get a good night sleep and a healthy breakfast so they can be ready for the test.
  • Also on Monday, students who do all of their reading homework are getting together for a "reading club" lunch in the classroom. Please make sure to check in with them about their reading logs sometime this weekend :)
  • Student picture day is on Wednesday.
  • I am still missing some students' iPad use guidelines and Google Password change forms. Please get those to me Monday or email me if you need extra copies.
That's all for now. Have a great weekend!
